New York Fashion Week Fall 2010: Red Lip Trend

My gal Amber over at Daily Makeover shares one of the hottest trends for fall 2010. Are you red-y?

Lipstick lovers always look forward to fall because it's the season of the bold lip. If you're not yet ready to plunge into the deep hues of the glampire beauty trend, there are many interpretations of the more classic crimson look. Oh, and stop making fun of your mother about her lip pencil: The formerly eschewed makeup implement is making a major comeback this fall. Get your sharpeners ready: Here are our favorite red lip looks of the season.

At Richard Chai, Gucci Westman for Revlon keyed makeup. Lips were defined with new-for-fall Revlon Suede Rhapsody Multi-Use Palette, set to launch in September 2010. First, Gucci applied ColorStay Lip Liner in Red all over the lip as a base, then painted on the deeper red lipstick from the palette which created a matte effect. "The clothes don't have a lot of color, so I felt a pop of pigment was needed on the lips," explains Westman.

China dolls were the beauty inspiration at Vivienne Tam, where makeup lead Charlotte Willer for Maybelline created a bright defined red lip look that was tempered by fresh skin and punctuated by a defined brow. To get such a precise defined lip look, Willer lined and filled lips in with Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in 50 Red, a gorgeous garnet. "It's an Asian red, which echoes Vivienne's collection," Willer explained. The color and texture was perfect--no additional lipstick was used.

Another stunning, sculpted red lip took center stage at Herve Léger, as it's known to do - this is no understudy red. Lisa Butler for MAC cosmetics created a strong, matte lip with MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, a cult favorite orange-red. Gals with pink skin tones need not shy away from this warm red. Per Butler, "Simply toning down the pinkness in the cheeks with a bit of foundation and skipping blush will prepare even a cooler-complexioned girl for this type of yellow-based red."

New York Fashion Week: L.A.M.B., Fall 2010

My girl Megan McIntyre of Daily Makeover scored an exclusive interview with Gwen Stefani, backstage at the L.A.M.B. Fall 2010 Fashion Week show.

Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week started today, and Daily Makeover kicked it off backstage at L.A.M.B. with designer Gwen Stefani. She gave us an exclusive look into what inspires her, how she creates that fab red lip (girlfriend does her own makeup!) and what beauty look her husband can’t get enough of.

What inspired the beauty look for the L.A.M.B. show?
The collection is based on a vintage, naughty, Hollywood starlet girl, a little bit of a modern, futuristic girl and a little bit of a soldier girl. I found these Ellen von Unwerth pictures with black makeup and the dark lips [that I loved] so we’re going to do the hair very set, vintage and glamorous with a lot of bangs.

The thing that I’ve learned is that you have an inspiration, you have a picture, an idea and it just evolves into what it’s going to be. You don’t consider when you come up with three ideas for a theme that you’re going to have a blizzard, a baby with an ear infection and the Chinese new year, but at the end of the day the creative process of having that pressure and that drama means you come up with things you normally wouldn’t. I can’t wait to see it all together. For me, it’s all about that part with the music and seeing the girls.

Red lips are a big beauty trend we’re seeing for Fall 2010. The red lipstick look is already one of your trademarks!
I just love when things that I love come back into style. I don’t have one specific red lipstick that I use. MAC’s sponsoring the show today, so [lead makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury] put a mixture of four different reds on me. I know she definitely used Russian Red. I tend to go more for the blue-reds than the orange-reds–I think they look better on me.

My husband [musician Gavin Rossdale] actually really likes [red lips] so whenever I don’t wear them he’s like “Wait, where are the lips?” So I like that Hollywood glamorous look and I always have and always will…I’m kind of stuck in my own ways.

Olay Total Effects Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash Reader Review

Hello, friends! Remember the fabulous giveaway I hosted a few weeks ago where one lucky reader got a chance to try Olay's new Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash (available in two formulas: Deep Penetrating Moisture and Exfoliate and Replenish)? Well, the winner wrote back about her prize, and I wanted to share her review with all of you. So without further ado...

Although initially unimpressed with the Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging bottles (which look like they were left in the sun too long and yellowed) and the scent (which is heavily floral), once I squeezed some of the Deep Penetrating Moisture body wash into my hand, I was enthused. The body wash is thick, reminding me of conditioner rather than liquid soap, and applied smoothly with very little lather, like a silky lotion. My skin immediately felt softer and more elastic, changes that lasted through toweling dry and were still noticeable 12 hours later. I convinced one of my family members to product test with me, and she agreed that the scent, though not offensive, was not particularly pleasant and thought that the body wash had a remarkably creamy texture and left her skin well hydrated.

The Exfoliate and Replenish body wash was less heavily scented, a definite improvement, but I was dissatisfied with the micro-derm beads, considering them to be too smooth for proper exfoliation. Since they are suspended in a cream similar to the Deep Penetrating Moisture, my skin still received a boost of hydration, though not as much. However, my fellow product tester was much more impressed. She found the smell pleasant, thought the body wash had just the right amount of beads that delivered gentle exfoliation and reported that her skin felt soft after use.

Of the two, the Deep Penetrating Moisture variety was definitely my preference, though I wish Olay would tone down the scent a bit. My skin was noticeably softer and smoother for almost 24 hours, which is a great victory over dry winter skin. -Erin

Beauty Bloggerati Spotlight: Holiday Beauty Gift Guide

'Tis the season of giving...so if you haven't done so already, I highly suggest you check out Spoiled Pretty's Holiday Beauty Gift Guide.

To supplement my gift picks, I recently asked my fellow Daily Makeover Beauty Bloggerati to weigh in on their favorite stocking stuffers under $15, and this is what they had to say:

I love the L'Oreal Clean Artiste Makeup Remover Pen ($11). It cleans up all liquid liner mishaps in a flash and doesn't irritate my eye area. Best of all, the fact that it's called Clean Artiste, as opposed to simply Clean Artist, is so Hollywood Montrose from Mannequin. -Beauty Blogging Junkie

I love anything from E.L.F. (Eyes Lips Face) for stocking stuffers, because they have entire kits of makeup (for example, a standard/waterproof mascara, eye liner, and eye brightening pencil) for $3. Their individual products are only $1 each, so you could literally fill a stocking with products, without having to go over $10. Is there anything better than that? -Makeover Momma

I love the mini Sephora palettes. They offer such incredible value - this one has 8 eyeshadows, four glosses and a blush for $15! -The Jet Set Girls

I love to give essential beauty items to my step-daughter to stock her up. Yes to Carrots Lip Butter ($3.69), Gillette Venus razor and refill cartridges ($10.99-15), Neutrogena Body Oil ($13) and Pantene Pro-V 5 Minute Strengthening Mask ($4.50) are a few of my favorite stocking stuffers. -A Mom in Red High Heels

Everyone in my family loves the single note essential oils from Aveda ($13) especially the eucalyptus. There are so many ways to use them; but we keep them by the bedside and dab a few drops between our hands and inhale before bedtime. It's part of our relaxation ritual. -The Jet Set Girls

Nude Lips is an adorable stocking stuffer for all lips – this organic cupuacu and Tahitian vanilla monoi lip balm melts at body temperature ($14) for the prettiest gloss and most kissable lips. -Talking Makeup

What are some of your go-to beauty stocking stuffers?

Beauty Bloggerati Spotlight: Best Light and Dark Nail Polishes

I'm in the market for some new nail polish, so I enlisted the advice of the DailyMakeover.com Beauty Bloggerati. Read on for some fab light and dark nail polish picks:

"My favorite go to color is OPI's Bubble Bath. It goes with any outfit and it's the perfect shade of white/pink! For dark polish, I am currently obsessed with OPI's Here Today...Aragon Tomorrow from the España line. It's is a deep deep forresty emerald green and totally fun for the fall!" -Lisa, These Lips Are Made For Glossin'

"I found two new polishes backstage at Fashion Week that I’m loving right now. CND Putty is an a very light beige. Sally Hansen Insta Dry in Blazing Blue...a deep midnight blue." -Rachel, DailyMakeover.com

"My favorite light polish is the mix of Essie Marshmallow and Ballet Slippers (Marshmallow goes on first). It's the famed combo that all the editors wore in The Devil Wears Prada (the book), and I have yet to find a light polish that makes my nails look as lit from within. My favorite dark is NARS Chinatown. It's a much deeper maroon than the bold Mr.-Big-red-wall-red you'd expect from the name." -Amber, Beauty Blogging Junkie

"I love Essie Ballet Slippers for a pretty, sophisticated look! I just purchased my first dark polish in about 15 years today and I love it. It's Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Cinna-Snap. It reminds me of a glass of super dark merlot." -Sarah, Hair Thursday

"For dark, I like the Sephora by OPI 212-Sephora. It's black, but has sparkles, so it's not totally goth. For light, I think it's hard to top the classic Essie Ballet Slippers." -Anne, The Jet Set Girls

"I'm not a huge fan of light colors but recently I picked up Sephora by OPI's Under My Trench Coat. This is as light as I get, this shade is a very pretty beigey-grey with some gold shimmer. For my dark color, lately I've found myself going with another Sephora by OPI shade Brunette on the Internet. It's a really rich, dark burgundy brown-red. Totally vampy." -Carla, Product Girl

"For light I love Essie's Adore-a-Ball or Revlon's #910 Barely Peach. They hold up very well if you cook a lot. For dark, I am still in love with OPI's Eiffel for this Color from their Fall 2009 Parisian color collection." -Julia, All About The Pretty

"Light: Essie is Waltz the perfect white nail polish, it has no pink undertones what so ever. The pigment is not too thick so it doesn't look like you have a white-out on. The classic white. Dark: MAC in Nocturnelle is the perfect pure black shade. You can't get more black than this one. The classic black." -Marta, Talking Makeup

"Favorite dark: CND Nail Noir - I almost cried during FW when I found out it's going away. I came home and bought 6 bottles online. LOVE this color. Favorite light: Essie Mademoiselle - a favorite of mine since forever! Now my daughter Bailey's hooked on it and my bottle disappears twice as fast!" -Erika, Makeup Bag

"I do a "faux-French" manicure. I use something cheap (like N.Y.C. Color white nail polish) to paint a quick, easy French manicure tip, and then use a little bit of cuticle oil cream (or lip
gloss or olive oil) over top create the "shine effect" of a top coat (it takes seconds to do). I also love Neutrogena's Instant Nail Enhancer to give a quick, healthy shine. I only use dark colors on my toes. I really want to try those Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens, because they look like big, portable markers - so you can paint your toes in a flash." -Bailey, Makeover Momma

"OPI Lincoln Park After Dark is my go-to dark shade. It looks great on a mani or pedi - and really, when is dark purple not an option for Fall/Winter? It's classic! Revlon Sheer Pink is my everyday nude. It adds only a touch of color along with a really great shine." -Tammy, A Mom In Red High Heels

Beauty Bloggerati Spotlight: Cold Weather Moisturizers

Girl, when the mercury drops, it's time to put away your summer moisturizer and break out something a little richer. Heaters and cold weather can zap the moisture from your skin, so it's important to replenish what you skin is lacking.

I'm in the market for a new winter moisturizer, so I decided to hit up The Beauty Bloggerati for some expert advice.

I've been loving Clarins Multi-Active Day Early Wrinkle Correction Cream. It moisturizes my dry/combo skin without breaking me out. Plus, it never leaves my neck with a gross, sticky feeling. –Karen, Makeup and Beauty Blog

I've been using Dermalogica's Active Moist for a little while now, it is perfect for my oily skin especially in warmer weather because it's so light but now that it's getting colder out, I'm trying a richer moisturizer. Right now I'm giving Elizabeth Arden's Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-aging Moisturizer with SPF30. So far I'm loving the results I'm seeing. It's soothing some would-be rosacea spots that seem to be trying to form on my skin and some hormonal acne dryness. It is a tad rich for my skin but I'd rather deal with that then some of the other issues I've been battling. –Carla, Product Girl

I have dry skin and when the weather turns cold I really have to baby it. I have found comfort in Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate Serum. While the scent is actually quite strong and not appealing to me, I've learned to accept it because of the wonderful things it does for my skin! –Tammy, A Mom in Red High Heels

I love Chanel Sublimage for cold winter weather. It's a bit heavy for me for my normal to oily skin in the summer, but it's perfect for the blustery windy days of January through March. –Amber, Beauty Blogging Junkie

I am addicted to Fresh Repair & Restore Face Balm normal - combo. Not only does it smell amazing but the texture is beautiful and it melts into your skin leaving it hydrated and supple. –Lisa, These Lips Are Made For Glossin'

I have sensitive dry/combination skin and I absolutely love using Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion with the pump, which I carry in my purse. –Jennifer, Beyond Beauty Basics

I have combination skin: definitely gets oily on my T-zone, and dry in other areas. I also have crazy sensitive skin, so I look like I'm sunburned sometimes (even if it's 10 degrees outside). I have just started using the Lierac Paris Creme Mesolift at night, because it has a ton of antioxidants, and hasn't made me break out. However, a more budget friendly night cream for ladies (that never fails), is just plain ole Vaseline cream (not petroleum). It's affordable, it's simple and it rarely irritates the skin (and it's perfect as an eye cream and lip moisturizer too!) –Bailey, Makeover Momma

Beauty Bloggerati Spotlight: MacGyver-ish Beauty Tips

Last week, as I removed pills from a sweater using a Schick Quattro razor, I started thinking about alternate uses for everyday beauty products. So I called on my fellow Beauty Bloggerati to share their MacGyver-ish beauty tips. Enjoy!

In a pinch, Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion works as an eye makeup remover. It even takes off mascara. -Karen, Makeup and Beauty Blog

I use a dry toothbrush to exfoliate snaggy, dry lips. -Amber, Beauty Blogging Junkie

I sometimes use my hair conditioner as a shaving-cream stand-in. A rich conditioner can moisturize and protect skin as well as your favorite shaving cream in a pinch, like when traveling! -Tammy, A Mom In Red High Heels

To keep my cuticles looking great when I don't have my favorite Solar Oil on hand, I use Chapstick or lip balm to moisturize them. -Erika, Makeup Bag

Gauze pads work better than cotton balls (or rounds) to remove polish. The textured surface grabs polish so it slides right off and you won't be left picking off cotton ball fibers! -Erika, Makeup Bag

A black Sharpie is the best quick fix for random gray hairs that seem to come out of nowhere! -Erika, Makeup Bag

For those days when I get really drastic breakouts I soak cotton rounds in warm water and then dip them in baking soda. I then lay the pads flat on my ace for about 10 min. The effect of the baking soda brings all of the zitty yuckiness to the surface and then I take sterile lance and pop the zit. Its a safe way to get rid of pimples on your face and it doesn't leave any scarring. -Lisa, These Lips Are Made For Glossin'

I'll do the old lipstick as blush trick - usually when I notice I'm looking deathly pale and I'm out running around to meetings/errands. I don't usually carry blush in my purse, but I always have lipstick or gloss. I dab a bit on the apples of my cheeks and blend. - Anne, The Jet Set Girls

I love to create my own tinted moisturizer by mixing a pinch of mineral foundation, a drop of makeup primer, and a dime size amount of heavy-duty sunscreen. Perfect for days outside! -Bailey, Makeover Momma

When I really need to blot my skin, I grab a piece of a toilet seat cover from the nearest bathroom (or sometimes tissue paper from a present), and use that to soak up any oil. -Bailey, Makeover Momma

I love applying a bit of shimmer cream lotion to my legs and arms to highlight my skin, but it can also be perfect to highlight your brow bone, cheekbones and even lips in a pinch. I also smooth the residue over the ends of my hair, because it tames flyways, makes hair smooth and gives it a sneaky dose of shine. -Bailey, Makeover Momma

I use Vaseline on my feet before bed. I like to slather it on my heels and then put some really thick socks on. It works better than most foot creams I've tried...and I've tried a lot! -Carla, Product Girl

I take the mascara a step further and use one closer to my brow color. It beefs up sparse brows, covers grays if you have them, and keeps them in line. The only caution is to use a waterproof. You don't want to be caught in the rain and have your brows wash off! -Jen, Beyond Beauty Basics

L'Occitane's shea butter hand cream, cuticle cream, conditioner on ends of hair, tame flyaway hair when dry. -Hope, The Jet Set Girls

Bloggers Take Manhattan

Please forgive me, peeps, for I have no time to do what I do.

I'm in NYC for the annual Daily Makeover Beauty Bloggerati conference - and it's been makeup, skincare and hair 24-7. So please forgive the lack of posts lately. But while I'm on here apologizing, I might as well tell you what I've been up to. I'm so tired, I'm about to pass out. But here are some quick highlights...

If you haven't tasted the crispy fried chicken, basilicious mozzarella sticks or fruit embellished fro-yo dessert at Mad For Chicken (formerly BonChon), you have not lived. Thanks for the tip, Erika.

Daily Makeover's site is about to get a makeover. Can't be too specific, but their new content and tools are going to blow your beauty-loving mind.

Had delish lunch at the Estee Lauder offices and finally met all of the PR girls I talk to ten times a day. All of the brands (which include an impressive lineup: MAC, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, La Mer, Tommy Hilfiger, Jo Malone, and more) are very interested in learning more about the Beauty Bloggerati and how they can better work with us.

Our Columbus Circle beauty crawl went a little like this:

*Fell a little more in luvre with Kiehl's. Told everyone within earshot about my obsession with their Superbly Restorative Argan Body Lotion; I think I converted many of my fellow bloggers into fans. Then we were all introduced to Kiehl's new Sunflower Oil hair products; the shampoo smells yummy fantastic - like fresh apricot. We also got the skinny on the new Rare Earth line, created for acne-prone and greasy gals like yours truly. They sent me home with samples, so look for reviews soon.

*Lancome is the freaking bomb. We were greeted with champagne, heavenly cupcakes and veritable wonderland of makeup. I had an opportunity to play around with their fall 2009 collection and chat up celebrity makeup artist, Andrew Sotomayor...who has the BEST SKIN EVER. No joke. You could inspect his face with a high powered microscope and not find one pore. And the kind folks at Lancome sent us all home with a bag of goodies, including the Oscillation Powerbooster mascara primer and new Hypnose Drama mascara - which, together, are TO DIE!

*L'Occitane has this amazing anti-aging skincare product, called Divine Cream, that will hit shelves September 16th. I smoothed some on my hand and the texture was truly divine. L'Occitane don't lie.

*I wish Philadelphia had a Space NK store. Really, every city should have at least one. It smelled so damn good inside and they had some mellow Marvin Gaye on the stereo...I just didn't want to leave. What I love about Space NK is the diverse range of brand offerings. I consider myself a beauty savant, and there were products and lines that I've never heard of. Can you even?

*If there's a store where I want one of everything, it's Fresh. I seriously don't think you can go wrong with anything they sell. My new fave Fresh products are the Brown Sugar Body Scrub and Body Cream. It's like a 1-2 punch to your flaky epidermis. Exfoliate with the scrub and then moisturize with the cream and you'll swear that you got bumped to the top of the skin transplant list. The transformation is unbelievable!

Attended the What Not To Wear premiere party at the Ted Gibson Salon, to celebrate Ted's new gig as the show's resident hair guru. Briefly chatted up Jason Backe and congratulated him on the oodles of magazines he's been quoted in these last few months. I love me some Ted and Jason...dolls, the both of them. They deserve all of the success coming their way.

Me, Amber and Marta at Revlon dinner

Dinner with Revlon at Almond was ab fab. The steak frites I ordered was un(freaking)real. Plus, we got up close and personal with some of their newest products. In the middle of my meal, I applied their Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick...and it still looked perfect when I returned to my room at the ACE Hotel 2 hours later.

Okay, losing consciousness now. I'll check in again as soon as I can. You might have to wait a lil longer than a New York minute...but it will be worth it.
